COVINGTON, KY –Covington Police have announced the arrest of a 17-year-old male from Newport in connection with a shooting that occurred overnight in the Eastside neighborhood of Covington. The incident, which sent a teenage girl to the hospital and endangered multiple others, has sparked an ongoing investigation into youth-involved violence in the area.
Shooting on 13th Street and Wheeler Avenue
At approximately 9:35 p.m., on Wednesday night, Covington officers responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of 13th Street and Wheeler Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, police located a 17-year-old female victim suffering from a grazing gunshot wound to her ankle.
Emergency medical services transported the victim to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, where she was treated and is currently listed in stable condition. The Covington Police Evidence Collection Unit responded to process the scene, gathering critical forensic evidence to aid in the investigation.
Others Nearly Struck by Gunfire
In addition to the injured teen, three other individuals were in close proximity to the gunfire and narrowly avoided injury. The presence of multiple potential victims has heightened the seriousness of the charges filed and emphasized the reckless nature of the shooting.
Suspect Apprehended in Newport
Over the course of the night, patrol officers and detectives canvassed the surrounding area, working quickly to develop leads. By around midnight, law enforcement officers located and apprehended the 17-year-old male suspect in Newport, Kentucky.
The juvenile suspect is now in custody, and police have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to public safety at this time.
Charges Filed
Detectives with the Covington Police Department have formally charged the juvenile suspect with the following:
•Three counts of Wanton Endangerment, 1st Degree
•One count of Assault, 2nd Degree
Due to the ages of both the victim and the suspect, their identities will not be released in accordance with juvenile privacy laws.
Ongoing Investigation & Community Involvement
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including a possible motive and whether any additional parties were involved. Police are urging anyone with further information about the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation.
