On August 6, 2025, around 2:14 p.m., Spring Hope Police responded to severe flooding on the 600 block of N Louisburg Road (NC 581). Floodwaters over six feet deep swept multiple vehicles. Despite warnings, some tried to cross. Tragically, 24-year-old Lottie Alston and 55-year-old Raymond “Pete” Evans Jr., both from Louisburg, were caught in the flood and lost their lives.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a passenger vehicle that had attempted to navigate the flood but was swept off the road into an adjacent ditch filled with rapidly moving water. A female occupant, Lottie Alston, had climbed onto the roof of the vehicle, while a male passenger, Raymond “Pete” Evans Jr., remained trapped inside. Officers quickly instructed both occupants to stay calm and remain where they were to ensure their safety.
Tragically, Lottie Alston fell from the roof into the floodwaters. Lieutenant Leary of the Spring Hope Police Department immediately entered the water to attempt a rescue. Shortly thereafter, Raymond Evans also entered the water. Unfortunately, the swift current immediately swept away both the occupants and Lt. Leary downstream.
Emergency response teams from the Spring Hope Police Department, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Spring Hope Fire Department, and Nash County EMS rushed to the scene to begin rescue operations. Lt. Leary was rescued after he managed to reach the edge of the floodwaters, where he awaited assistance.
Despite rapid deployment of rescue resources, including swift water rescue teams and drone technology, search efforts to locate the two vehicle occupants were hindered by the dangerous flood conditions. Additional support arrived from Middlesex Fire Department, Rocky Mount Fire Department, Nashville Police Department, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and Nash County Emergency Management to aid in the extensive search and rescue operation.
After exhaustive efforts and as floodwaters began to recede, rescuers were able to locate the two victims. Sadly, both were found deceased.
The Spring Hope Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Lottie Alston and Raymond “Pete” Evans Jr. during this incredibly difficult and tragic time.
We also wish to express sincere gratitude to all agencies and individuals who provided assistance and support during this emergency response. The coordinated efforts of law enforcement, fire departments, EMS personnel, and emergency management teams were vital in managing this tragic incident.
This heartbreaking event serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers posed by flooding and the importance of heeding safety warnings during severe weather conditions. Our thoughts remain with the community as they recover from this devastating loss.
