CHICAGO, Ill. – A devastating act of violence unfolded in the early morning hours Sunday when a mass shooting on North La Crosse Avenue claimed the life of 22-year-old Jashyra Monae, affectionately known as “Shyra Shyra,” and left six others wounded. The incident occurred around 2:48 a.m., shattering the quiet of the neighborhood and sending panic through the community.
Authorities say the gunfire erupted as a group of people gathered in the area, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
When first responders arrived, they were met with a chaotic and heartbreaking scene. Paramedics and police officers worked quickly to render aid, rushing the most gravely injured victims to nearby hospitals. Despite their efforts, Jashyra succumbed to her injuries.
According to officials, the victims range in age from 17 to 29 years old, with three still listed in critical condition. The remaining injured are said to be in stable condition, but all are receiving ongoing medical care.
Detectives spent hours combing the scene for evidence, placing dozens of yellow markers to note shell casings and other items that could help identify the shooter or shooters. Surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses is also being reviewed, and investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Neighbors described the incident as both shocking and tragic, noting that while the city has struggled with gun violence, the scale of this shooting has left them shaken.
Community leaders and activists are already calling for justice for Jashyra and the others injured, while also renewing pleas for stronger measures to address the city’s ongoing gun violence crisis.

Jashyra’s family, reeling from the sudden loss, described her as a vibrant young woman with a bright future ahead. Loved ones have begun gathering to support one another and plan a memorial in her honor.
