Big Rapids, MI — August 10, 2025 — A devastating single-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon claimed one life and brought traffic to a halt on southbound U.S. 131 in Mecosta County. The fatal collision occurred near mile marker 139, close to the Perry Avenue overpass, leaving behind a scene of twisted metal and heavy fire damage.
According to officials, the vehicle struck the roadway before bursting into flames, coming to rest on the east side of the highway. By the time first responders arrived—including crews from the Big Rapids Fire Department and deputies from the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office—the vehicle was already engulfed in flames. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze, but the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The impact of the crash caused structural damage to the Perry Avenue overpass, prompting authorities to close all southbound lanes of U.S. 131 in the area. Traffic was diverted at the Perry Avenue exit while investigators and highway crews assessed the safety of the overpass and worked to clear debris. Officials have not yet provided an estimated reopening time.
The incident has created significant travel disruptions. Exit 139, a major access point to Business U.S. 131 and M-20 into downtown Big Rapids, sees heavy daily use by commuters and travelers.
