Augusta, GA — A Waynesboro man with a known history of drunk driving was arrested Thursday night following a chaotic incident in downtown Augusta where he allegedly struck several vehicles before fleeing from law enforcement.
Eric Rene Anton, 30, of Waynesboro, was taken into custody after deputies tackled him on Broad Street at approximately 10 p.m., according to an arrest warrant. The confrontation unfolded after Anton fled on foot from a traffic stop. Witnesses captured dramatic footage of the arrest, showing deputies wrestling Anton to the ground. Some onlookers reported that Anton was tasered while attempting to evade capture.
Dryver Brennan, a witness who posted on Facebook, described the scene: “I saw it when it started. He reversed down Ellis for a good block before getting tackled.” Several photos circulating online revealed a heavily damaged black Jeep, identified as Anton’s vehicle, with its front end mangled from collisions.
Other community members took to social media to call for additional images and information about the suspect they described as the “drunk guy hitting everyone’s car in downtown Augusta.” The incident caused significant alarm among residents as multiple vehicles were damaged in the area.
As of Saturday, Anton remained in custody at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. He faces charges including driving under the influence (DUI), as authorities continue investigating the full extent of the damage and the events leading up to the arrest.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving, particularly in busy urban areas. Law enforcement continues to urge the public to report any information related to this case.
