SAINT PAUL, MN — Authorities in Saint Paul are investigating a tragic shooting incident that left a 12-year-old boy critically injured on the city’s west side early Sunday evening.
The incident occurred on Congress Street West, where officers responded to reports of an accidental shooting. Upon arrival, Saint Paul Police secured the area and allowed medics to enter the scene to treat the injured child.
Initial reports indicated the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was conscious and breathing. However, an update from paramedics later confirmed that the injury was more severe than first believed — the boy had a gunshot wound to the head, was unresponsive, and showed signs of a significant brain injury. Despite his condition, officials said he was still breathing on his own.
Investigators are now working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting. At this stage, it remains unclear whether the incident was an accidental discharge of a firearm or a possible suicide attempt.
A crime scene log has been established as detectives collect evidence and interview potential witnesses. Authorities have not released the identity of the child, and no further information about how the gun was obtained has been disclosed.
Saint Paul Police urged the community to remain patient as the investigation unfolds. “Our primary focus right now is on the well-being of the child and understanding exactly what happened,” a department spokesperson said.
The boy has been transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. More updates are expected as the case develops.
