The incident occurred around 12:39 a.m. when New York State Police responded to the scene and found a 2009 Nissan Sentra immobilized on the right shoulder of the interstate. According to initial investigations, a 2014 Ford traveling in the same northbound lane collided with the rear of the Nissan, causing both vehicles to spin uncontrollably across all lanes of traffic. The crash ended with both vehicles impacting the median on the left shoulder.
