The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) has identified the driver who tragically lost his life in a fatal collision last week as 23-year-old Ivan Peña Perez, a resident of Kalamazoo.
The devastating crash occurred in the early morning hours of August 9, around 2 a.m., at the intersection of Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a two-vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers found both vehicles severely damaged. One vehicle was off the roadway with its driver trapped inside, while the second vehicle was unoccupied nearby.
Officers quickly discovered Mr. Peña Perez inside the first vehicle, where smoke and fire were emanating from beneath the car. Emergency personnel acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and extricate the trapped driver. Despite the efforts of first responders to save him, Mr. Peña Perez was pronounced deceased at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
Captain Danielle Guilds of the KDPS Criminal Investigations Division expressed condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Peña Perez, stating, “Kalamazoo Public Safety extends our heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Perez during this incredibly difficult time. We also want to assure the community that we remain committed to finding answers about what happened that night.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the ongoing inquiry.
