HOUSTON, TX — Authorities have charged Aaron Bartholomew Sheehan, 40, with murder in connection to the fatal stabbing of Anival Elvir Ortiz, a 77-year-old Houston resident, on the morning of August 7. Sheehan is facing charges in the 482nd State District Court following an intensive investigation by the Houston Police Department (HPD) and partner agencies.
According to HPD Homicide Division investigators, patrol officers were dispatched to a stabbing call at 123 North Drennan Street around 5:55 a.m. on August 7. When they arrived, they learned that Ortiz had been attacked while riding his bicycle to work on a nearby bike trail.
Authorities allege that Sheehan emerged from behind a fence and stabbed Ortiz without provocation. Despite his injury, Ortiz managed to continue to his workplace, where concerned co-workers quickly called 911. He was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead by medical staff.
Detectives worked quickly to track down the suspect. Investigators determined that shortly after the stabbing, the assailant was seen boarding a Metro transit bus. Surveillance footage of the man was obtained and publicly released on August 8, prompting a wave of tips and leads.
Through coordinated investigative efforts, Sheehan was identified as the prime suspect. On Tuesday, August 12, members of HPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team located and arrested Sheehan without incident.
“This was a brazen and unprovoked act of violence against an elderly man simply on his way to work,” HPD officials said in a statement. “Thanks to the quick cooperation between our detectives, the Metro Police Department, and the public, we were able to identify and apprehend the suspect in just a few days.”
The murder of Anival Elvir Ortiz has deeply shaken the local community, where he was known as a hardworking and kind-hearted man. He had worked in the area for years and was recognized by neighbors and coworkers for his dedication and warm personality.
Sheehan remains in custody as the investigation continues. Authorities have not yet released a possible motive for the attack. Anyone with additional information related to the case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division or Crime Stoppers of Houston.
