It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and longtime family member of Tarheel Auto, Gerald Efird. Gerald’s journey with us began in the early days of the 1980s, when Tarheel Auto was just getting its start. From those first moments, his presence became an irreplaceable part of our story—a story built on hard work, trust, and camaraderie.
Pictured here with Larry Baucom at our original Tarheel Auto location, Gerald’s ever-present smile and infectious laughter were as much a part of the business as the cars we sold. He brought with him not just skill and dedication, but also a warmth that made every workday brighter. For those of us who were fortunate enough to work alongside him, Gerald wasn’t just a co-worker—he was family.
Through decades of change and growth, Gerald’s friendship, loyalty, and good humor remained constants. He celebrated our successes, stood by us in challenges, and reminded us all that work could—and should—be filled with joy. Whether it was sharing a story over coffee, lending a hand without being asked, or bringing levity to a stressful day, Gerald had a way of making people feel valued and at ease.
His deep connection to Tarheel Auto was more than professional—it was personal. Gerald’s commitment reflected his belief in the people, the purpose, and the pride that went into every day’s work. He helped shape the culture of our team, where trust, mutual respect, and friendship weren’t just ideals—they were lived experiences.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy and prayers to his beloved wife, Gail, and to all of his family. We know this loss is felt far beyond the walls of our business, reaching into the many lives Gerald touched with his kindness and humor.
Rest in peace, Gerald. You will forever be a part of the Tarheel Auto story—a chapter written with laughter, loyalty, and love. Your legacy lives on in the memories we hold, the lessons you taught, and the friendships you helped build.
You may be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
