We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Roland Lister, a cherished alumnus of The Marching Southerners and a beloved music educator whose impact resonated for more than five decades.

Roland’s journey with The Marching Southerners began in 1965 when he proudly marched baritone and euphonium through 1969. His passion for music and dedication to excellence were evident from the very start, marking him as an enduring member of this celebrated Jacksonville State University tradition.

After earning his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Jacksonville State University, Roland continued to immerse himself in the musical community, becoming a proud member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a fraternity dedicated to the advancement of music in America. For over 50 years, Roland devoted his life to teaching music in the Gadsden area. His passion for music and education went far beyond notes on a page; he inspired countless students to find their own voices and fostered a love for music that many carried throughout their lives. Roland’s legacy in music education is not just in the classrooms he led, but in the hearts of the generations he influenced and the community he helped shape.

His commitment to nurturing talent and his genuine care for his students made him much more than a teacher—he was a mentor, a role model, and a guiding light. His devotion to music and to people left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
