Sunbury Man, Manuel Vazquez Perez, Killed in Route 35 Crash; One Seriously Injured

MIFFLIN COUNTY, PA – Tragedy struck on Route 35 when a van carrying four people crashed, leaving 30-year-old Manuel Vazquez Perez of Sunbury dead and another passenger seriously injured.

Emergency crews responded to the scene to find a 2007 Chevrolet Express van heavily damaged and crumpled against a guardrail. Investigators say the driver lost control while negotiating a curve, causing the van to cross into opposing lanes. The vehicle struck two curbs before coming to a violent stop against the guardrail.

Perez was seated in the second row and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He suffered catastrophic trauma and, despite the urgent response from emergency personnel, died before he could be airlifted from the scene.

A second passenger, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Geisinger Lewistown Hospital with suspected serious injuries. The driver and a third passenger sustained only minor injuries and declined medical transport.

The Pennsylvania State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading to the crash, including speed, road conditions, and whether any mechanical issues played a role.

The community is mourning the loss of Mr. Perez, remembered by loved ones as a kind and hardworking individual. “Our deepest sympathy goes to the family of Mr. Perez during this incredibly difficult time,” a statement from local authorities read.

Route 35 was temporarily closed while crews cleared the wreckage and conducted an on-scene investigation.
