COURTENAY, B.C. – A man is in custody following a violent daylight assault near Lewis Park in Courtenay on Sunday, August 10, 2025, that left local resident James Whitaker seriously injured. The swift action of bystanders and responding officers helped ensure the suspect was apprehended within minutes of the attack.
At approximately 11:35 a.m., Comox Valley RCMP received a distressing 911 call in which a woman could be heard screaming for help, reporting that her husband was being attacked. Officers raced to the scene and found an elderly man lying on the ground, bleeding heavily from his face. The victim appeared to have sustained severe facial injuries in what police describe as an unprovoked and “senseless” assault.
A witness at the scene pointed out the alleged attacker, who was standing only a short distance away. Officers immediately moved in and took the suspect into custody without incident.
“This was a senseless attack on a vulnerable member of our community,” said Inspector Scott Mercer, Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP. “We are grateful to witnesses who stepped forward to help and to those who provided critical information that led to the quick arrest of the suspect.”
The accused, 45-year-old Melvin Teagai, who is known to police, has been charged with aggravated assault and robbery. Authorities confirmed that he will remain in custody pending his next court appearance.
The victim, while suffering significant injuries, is expected to survive. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, but he faces a difficult recovery. Victim Services has been engaged to provide support for both him and his family during this time.
The incident has shaken many residents of Courtenay, particularly because it occurred in a public, family-friendly area in broad daylight. Police have not disclosed a possible motive, and the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the assault or may have additional information to contact Comox Valley RCMP at their non-emergency line or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
For now, community members are expressing relief that the suspect was apprehended quickly, and gratitude to those who intervened and aided the victim in his time of need.
