PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — Law enforcement officials are responding to a major incident in the Pittsville area after four deputies were shot during what authorities are describing as an active shooter situation.
As of 7 p.m. Central Time, details remain limited, but the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that multiple deputies were struck by gunfire while responding to a call in the rural community. The situation remains fluid, with law enforcement agencies from across the region converging on the scene.
A WDBJ7 reporter at the scene described a “very heavy” law enforcement presence near the intersection of Pittsville Road and Homestead Road, where police have established a large perimeter. The area has been cordoned off, and residents are being urged to stay indoors and avoid the area entirely.
WSET Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger shared initial reports indicating that multiple deputies were wounded in the exchange of gunfire. The extent of their injuries has not yet been released, and it remains unclear whether any suspects have been taken into custody.
Emergency medical personnel, including ambulances and medevac helicopters, have been spotted arriving and departing from the scene, transporting victims to nearby trauma centers. State police have also joined the response, with tactical units believed to be deployed to secure the area and locate any armed individuals involved.
Authorities have not confirmed what led to the shooting or whether there are still active threats in the vicinity. Witnesses in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots earlier in the afternoon, followed by a rapid influx of police vehicles, armored units, and SWAT personnel.
The Virginia State Police and neighboring county sheriff’s offices are assisting in the investigation and containment efforts. Officials are expected to hold a briefing later this evening to provide updated information to the public.
This is a developing story. The condition of the four deputies and the circumstances surrounding the incident will be updated as soon as confirmed details become available.
Residents in the Pittsville area are urged to remain vigilant, follow official instructions, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
