The Kitchener Waterloo Predators Volleyball Club is deeply heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear friend, coach, and mentor, Devin Swanson. His life was tragically cut short, leaving behind a grieving community, his loving wife, Rachel, and their precious 6-month-old daughter, Rowyn.
From the moment Coach Devin joined the KW Predators, his presence was unmistakable. His warm smile could put even the most nervous player at ease, his encouraging words could lift the heaviest spirits, and his unwavering belief in his athletes inspired them to push beyond their limits—both on and off the court.
Devin was more than a coach. He was a role model, a mentor, and a guiding light who cared just as deeply for the person as he did for the player. His coaching philosophy was rooted in compassion and connection, built on the belief that great athletes are shaped by strong character.
He poured countless hours into training sessions, going above and beyond to ensure that each athlete felt valued, supported, and capable of reaching their potential. His practices were a perfect balance of hard work and joy—where discipline met laughter, and where every drill was an opportunity for growth.
To his players, Devin was a steady source of encouragement. In moments of victory, he celebrated with pride; in times of defeat, he reminded them that resilience is built through challenges. His voice was ever-present in the gym—sometimes instructive, sometimes lighthearted, but always sincere. He had a gift for helping young athletes see the potential within themselves, often before they could see it themselves.
To his colleagues and fellow coaches, Devin was a trusted teammate and a dependable friend. He freely shared his ideas, collaborated with enthusiasm, and stepped in to help wherever needed. His passion for volleyball was contagious, and his commitment to the KW Predators extended far beyond the court. He cared about the health, growth, and success of the club as a whole, always seeking ways to make it stronger.
Devin’s influence extended well beyond the game. His life reflected kindness, dedication, and humility. He had an extraordinary way of making everyone feel included—whether they were a top-level player or someone just learning the game. In every interaction, he brought authenticity and genuine care, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Outside of coaching, Devin’s greatest pride and joy was his family. As a devoted husband, his love for Rachel was evident to all. The arrival of their daughter Rowyn brought a new and radiant joy into his life—a joy that friends say made his smile even brighter. Though his time with her was heartbreakingly short, his love as a father was immeasurable and enduring.
The loss of Coach Devin is deeply felt throughout the KW Predators community. His laughter, encouragement, and calming presence will be profoundly missed. But while we mourn, we also carry forward the incredible legacy of mentorship, compassion, and belief that he leaves behind.
Though we wish for more time, we are grateful for every moment shared with Devin. His spirit will continue to guide us in the gym, his lessons will live on in the hearts of his athletes, and his example will inspire future generations of KW Predators.
Rest in peace, Coach Devin. You will forever be part of our family, and your light will never fade.
If you want, I can also prepare a short tribute version of this for the KW Predators’ official social media pages so that players, parents, and the wider community can share their condolences in a more public memorial post. That would make it easier for the community to rally together in his memory.
