NORTHWESTERN TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — Multiple students were injured Wednesday afternoon when a Leander Independent School District bus was involved in a serious crash near Big Sandy Creek, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:16 p.m. near the intersection of Nameless Road and Palomino Ranch Drive, according to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office. The school bus was carrying 42 children and one adult chaperone at the time.
Emergency responders from Austin-Travis County EMS confirmed that several children sustained injuries, though the severity has not yet been fully disclosed. Some students were treated at the scene, while others were transported to area hospitals for further care. No fatalities have been reported as of Wednesday evening.
Kristin Dark, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is leading the investigation. DPS troopers were joined by sheriff’s deputies, EMS personnel, and multiple fire departments in what was described as a swift, coordinated response.
“Our priority right now is ensuring all the children are safe, accounted for, and receiving any medical care they need,” Dark said.
The crash’s location has raised additional concern among residents. Just last month, the Big Sandy Creek area suffered devastating flash floods that damaged infrastructure, including sections of Nameless Road. While repairs have been ongoing, some stretches of roadway remain in suboptimal condition. Authorities have not confirmed whether the road’s state contributed to Wednesday’s accident.
Following the crash, parents rushed to the area after receiving district alerts. Law enforcement set up a secure perimeter to allow first responders to work without obstruction. Children who were not seriously hurt were placed on another bus and transported to a designated reunification point to meet their families.
In a statement released late Wednesday, Leander ISD expressed concern and support for those impacted:
“Our hearts are with the families affected by this afternoon’s bus accident. We are grateful for the rapid response from local emergency services and are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. Counselors will be available at the affected schools to support students and staff.”
EMS crews confirmed they coordinated with STAR Flight and nearby hospitals in case air transport became necessary for critical injuries. Investigators from DPS are expected to examine multiple factors, including the bus’s mechanical condition, driver performance, road conditions, and any possible weather influences. They will also review available traffic camera footage and take statements from witnesses, including students and the bus driver.
This incident underscores ongoing safety concerns in the Big Sandy Creek area, where residents have repeatedly called for more road repairs and additional safety measures on Nameless Road following severe weather damage.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact DPS investigators as the investigation continues.
This is a developing story, and updates will be released as more information becomes available.
