Mentor Police Release Update on Fatal I-90 East Crash

MENTOR, Ohio — Authorities have released new details regarding the multi-vehicle crash that shut down a section of I-90 East for several hours on Wednesday afternoon, leaving 85-year-old James Kephart dead and two others injured.

According to the City of Mentor Police Department, the collision occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. near State Route 306. Emergency responders arrived to find a chaotic scene involving several vehicles and extensive roadway damage.

Investigators say the incident began when a Jeep struck a Toyota RAV4, which then collided with another vehicle in the same lane. The Jeep reportedly continued forward, hitting both a Ford Focus and the trailer of a semi-truck before coming to a stop.

Two good Samaritans who witnessed the crash immediately rushed to help, pulling Kephart from the wreckage. He was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center, but despite the lifesaving efforts of bystanders and first responders, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police confirmed that two other individuals were hurt in the crash, though their identities and conditions have not yet been released. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, with officials examining factors such as possible medical emergencies, road conditions, and vehicle performance.

The crash caused significant traffic delays, with I-90 East near SR-306 closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and gather evidence.

Kephart’s death has left his Geneva community mourning. Friends and family describe him as a kind and active man who valued his connections and enjoyed life to the fullest.

Mentor police expressed gratitude to the witnesses who stepped in to assist, noting that their quick actions reflected true community spirit. Authorities are asking anyone with additional information or dashcam footage from the time of the crash to contact the Mentor Police Department to aid the ongoing investigation.
