GRETNA, Va. — A shooting in Gretna Wednesday evening left three law enforcement officers with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a source familiar with the situation who spoke to WDBJ but requested anonymity.
The incident occurred while officers were serving warrants at a residence, though details surrounding the events that led to the shooting remain limited. The source indicated that there are no confirmed arrests at this time, and it is unclear whether anyone else sustained injuries during the exchange.
Due to complications in removing the injured officers from the residence, a SWAT team was deployed to assist. First responders faced a challenging scene, requiring coordination among multiple law enforcement and emergency agencies.
A WDBJ7 reporter on the scene described a “very heavy scene” at the intersection of Pittsville Road and Homestead Road in Pittsylvania County. Multiple local and federal agencies responded, including the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst County Sheriff, Danville Police Department, Virginia State Troopers, U.S. Marshalls, as well as Gretna Fire and Rescue, Hurt Fire Department, and a Centra helicopter for medical support and air assistance.
While law enforcement agencies have not yet released an official statement, public officials have offered their support. Rep. John McGuire (R-VA 5th District) shared on social media:
“My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies who were shot in Pittsylvania County.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, including the events leading up to the warrant service and the identity of the shooter. Residents in the surrounding area were advised to avoid the intersection of Pittsville Road and Homestead Road as emergency operations continued Wednesday evening.
The coordinated response from multiple agencies underscores the seriousness of the situation and the priority placed on the safety of both law enforcement personnel and the public.
More information is expected as the investigation progresses. WDBJ7 and local authorities continue to monitor the scene and will provide updates regarding the condition of the injured officers, any arrests, and further details about the incident.
The shooting has prompted an outpouring of support from the community, highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement officers serving warrants and responding to high-risk situations. Residents and officials alike are calling for continued vigilance and respect for the ongoing investigation as authorities work to secure the scene and gather evidence.
