COOLSPRING TOWNSHIP, IN — The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has announced the arrest of 48-year-old Matthew J. Mayer, of Elmira, New York, in connection with a violent home invasion that occurred on the morning of Saturday, August 9, 2025.
According to LCSO officials, deputies were dispatched late that morning to a residence in the 6000 west block of CR 400 North after receiving reports of a break-in and assault in progress. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man — later identified as Mayer — outside the home. He was immediately taken into custody while investigators began processing the scene.
Incident Details
The homeowner, a 63-year-old woman, told investigators that she was inside her home when she noticed an unfamiliar vehicle in her driveway. As she moved toward the front door, it was suddenly forced open by Mayer, who then entered the residence without permission.
Once inside, Mayer allegedly launched a violent physical attack on the homeowner, causing injuries to her upper body. In a surprising turn, several juveniles who had been in the vehicle with Mayer followed him into the home and reportedly intervened, convincing him to stop the assault.
Emergency medical personnel arrived on scene to evaluate the victim for her injuries, which were classified as moderate. Mayer was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being turned over to law enforcement.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Following the on-scene investigation, detectives submitted a probable cause affidavit outlining Mayer’s alleged actions. Probable cause was granted, and a sealed arrest warrant was issued. Once Mayer was released from the hospital, he was taken into custody by the LCSO Warrants Division and transported to the La Porte County Jail (LCJ).
Mayer is facing multiple felony charges, including:
•Burglary Resulting in Bodily Injury (Level 3 Felony)
•Battery Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury (Level 6 Felony)
•Residential Entry (Level 6 Felony)
•Strangulation (Level 6 Felony)
He is currently being held in LCJ on a $25,005 cash-only bond set through Superior Court I.
No Known Connection to Victim
Investigators have determined there is no prior relationship or known connection between Mayer, the victim, or the residence. The motive for the incident remains under investigation.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation for the rapid response of deputies and emergency medical teams, and reassured the community that this appears to be an isolated incident.
Authorities emphasize that all criminal charges are accusations and that Mayer is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
