CLEVELAND, OH — On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Cleveland police responded to a Code 1 call for “unknown trouble” in the Second District, where they found Deonte Alexander suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite immediate aid and EMS efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
As officers worked at the scene, additional reports indicated that the suspect had fled on foot. A search of the surrounding area led officers to encounter a male matching the suspect’s description. The individual was armed with a firearm and was ordered to surrender. During this encounter, a Cleveland Police Officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.
On August 14, 2025, the suspect was released from the hospital and subsequently transported to the Cuyahoga County Jail. On August 15, 2025, the suspect, 49-year-old Sterling Pettway, was formally charged with Murder and Felonious Assault on a Police Officer. Fortunately, the officer involved in the shooting was not injured. In accordance with standard protocol, the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
