Jeffersonville, IN – Authorities are investigating a gruesome homicide in Jeffersonville after a man was reportedly killed and decapitated by his stepson on Friday morning. The Jeffersonville Police Department confirmed that the suspect, Bryce Winnecke, is in custody and faces murder charges following a standoff that lasted more than four hours.

The incident began around 10 a.m. on August 16, when police were called to the 1700 block of Summerlin Place for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers discovered what they described as a “very apparent” homicide, finding the victim’s body deceased and decapitated inside the home.

Investigators quickly traced leads to a second residence approximately a mile away on Callaway Drive, where the victim’s head was located. It was at this location that officers encountered Winnecke, who was reportedly armed, prompting a standoff. Police confirmed that the Callaway Drive home belongs to Winnecke’s mother.

The standoff lasted several hours, with SWAT officers eventually deploying flash-bang devices. Winnecke surrendered without further incident and has been formally charged with murder. Officials later confirmed that the victim was Winnecke’s stepfather, though his identity has not yet been released.

Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh described the scene as “horrific,” emphasizing the disturbing nature of the crime. Capt. Sam Moss added that, due to the ongoing investigation, police could not release additional details about the victim’s injuries at this time.

One neighbor described the family as friendly and private, expressing shock at the events that unfolded.
