PAIA, Hawaii — The Maui community is reeling after a police officer was shot and killed during a confrontation in Paia on Friday night. The Maui Police Department confirmed the devastating loss late Friday, describing it as one of the darkest moments in the department’s history.
According to Chief John Pelletier, officers were dispatched to the area of the old sugar mill in Paia following reports of illegal gunfire. When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered an armed individual who was discharging what investigators believe to have been a rifle. During the confrontation, one officer was struck in the chest by gunfire.
