LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred in the Midlands over the weekend as Jose Rivas, 24, of West Columbia.
According to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, Rivas died early Sunday morning from injuries sustained in the accident, which happened along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 26.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that Rivas was driving a Mitsubishi sedan when the vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a guardrail, and overturned. Officials confirmed that Rivas was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Coroner Fisher also stated that Rivas was not wearing a seatbelt when the collision occurred — a factor that may have contributed to the severity of his injuries. Emergency responders were unable to save him at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the roadway. No further details have been released at this time.
Friends and family of Jose Rivas are left grieving the sudden loss of a young life. Loved ones describe him as a kind and vibrant individual who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
If you want, I can also prepare a more personal tribute version of this that focuses more on honoring his memory and less on the crash details.
