The Las Vegas community is mourning the tragic and senseless loss of Andre Matthews, who died after being shot during an altercation just west of the Las Vegas Strip in the early hours of Wednesday, August 6, 2025. He was 38 years old.
According to Las Vegas Metro Police, the incident unfolded around 2 a.m. near the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Richfield Boulevard. Officers responding to the scene found Matthews lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the neck. Despite emergency efforts, his injuries proved fatal, and he passed away on August 8.
Investigators learned that Matthews had been on break from his job at a nearby fast-food restaurant when the confrontation began. Surveillance footage and witness statements suggest that the altercation started with an argument between Matthews and a man later identified as Joseph Skeirik, 30.
Witness accounts paint a disturbing picture of the moments leading up to the shooting. One witness told police that Skeirik, who reportedly has a swastika tattoo, repeatedly used a racial slur toward Matthews. Another recalled that Matthews had simply asked a woman, later identified as Vivian Jimenez, 34, for a bite of her hot dog before tensions escalated.
Security video from multiple locations shows Matthews running after Skeirik and Jimenez shortly before the fatal shooting. Moments later, the pair were seen running away without Matthews in sight—until officers discovered him lying in the street. Police allege that Jimenez provided the firearm used in the shooting and that neither suspect made any attempt to call for help.
Both Skeirik and Jimenez were arrested on Sunday, August 10. Skeirik faces five charges, including open murder and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person due to a prior felony conviction. Jimenez faces three charges, including open murder. Due to the severity of the charges, judges in both cases declined to set bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 27.
Police records have referred to the victim under both “Andre Matthew” and “Andre Matthews,” but friends and loved ones know exactly who he was—a hardworking, kindhearted man whose life was rooted in perseverance and a quiet dignity. Those close to him describe Matthews as someone who worked hard to support himself, greeted others with a ready smile, and found joy in life’s small moments.
His death has left an immense void for his friends, co-workers, and family members, who are now struggling to process the loss of a man they say deserved nothing but kindness and respect. In a city that prides itself on energy and resilience, his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
As the legal process moves forward, the community remembers Andre Matthews not just for the tragic way his life ended, but for the warmth, work ethic, and humanity he brought to those around him. His life was far more than the circumstances of his death, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
