Arrest Made in Bartholomew County Following Investigation into Sexual Assault of Pregnant Juvenile

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A disturbing case that has shaken the Columbus, Indiana community has led to a significant arrest following a thorough investigation by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department. On Friday evening, deputies took 18-year-old Nolan A. Riley into custody in connection with a reported sex offense involving a 17-year-old pregnant juvenile victim.

According to law enforcement officials, Riley, whose listed address is 6454 S. Jonesville Road, was arrested at approximately 8:54 p.m. and is now facing multiple serious felony charges. These include:

  • Rape
  • Child Exploitation
  • Criminal Confinement

The victim, who has not been publicly named due to her age and the nature of the case, came forward earlier this year, sparking what officials described as a “lengthy and detailed investigation”. Over the course of several weeks, sheriff’s deputies gathered evidence and conducted interviews to build a case. The investigation ultimately identified Riley as the suspect, leading to his arrest late last week.

“This was a complex and emotionally challenging case,” said Lt. Dane Duke, spokesperson for the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department. “But our investigators remained committed to seeking justice for the victim. We are grateful for her courage in coming forward.”

As of Monday morning, Riley remains in custody at the Bartholomew County Jail, where he is being held on a $1 million bond, according to official jail records. He has not yet entered a plea, and a court date is expected to be scheduled soon.

Due to the sensitive nature of the case, further details—including how the juvenile became pregnant and the timeline of the offenses—have not been released publicly. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have asked the public to refrain from speculation or sharing unverified information online as the legal process unfolds.

The case has sparked widespread concern throughout the Columbus and Bartholomew County area, particularly among those working in youth services and advocacy. Many are calling for increased resources and support for survivors of sexual violence, especially minors, and for ongoing education around consent and exploitation prevention.

Local advocacy organizations have also expressed support for the victim and encouraged others who may be facing similar trauma to seek help through local resources such as the Columbus-based Turning Point Domestic Violence Services or the National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-656-4673).

As the community processes the deeply troubling nature of this case, officials are reminding the public that all accused individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, they also affirm their unwavering commitment to holding accountable those who commit crimes of sexual violence and exploitation.
