New Philadelphia, OH — July 14, 2025 —
A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the New Philadelphia community following the drowning of a 16-year-old girl at Tall Timber Lake over the weekend. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon when the teenager went underwater and was not immediately located. After several tense minutes, she was recovered from the water and transported to Akron Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite the best efforts of first responders and hospital staff, the young girl passed away, as confirmed today, Monday, July 14, by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis L. Campbell, the Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, providing all relevant information to support their ongoing investigation and formal determination of cause of death.
“Our thoughts go out to the family during this unimaginable time,” Sheriff Campbell said in a statement. “We will not be releasing any further details at this time, in order to allow the family the privacy and space they need to notify all relatives and begin processing this loss.”
A Day That Turned Tragic
What began as a typical summer outing at Tall Timber Resort, a popular recreational destination just outside New Philadelphia, turned tragic when the teen disappeared beneath the surface of the lake. Witnesses say the girl was enjoying time in the water with friends when she suddenly went under and did not reappear. Emergency crews were immediately alerted, and a frantic search began.
Rescue personnel pulled her from the water after several minutes and administered life-saving measures on site before she was airlifted to Akron Children’s Hospital. The critical window between her submersion and recovery, however, proved too long.
Community in Mourning
Though authorities have not yet released the teen’s name, the loss is already being felt across the tight-knit Tuscarawas County community. Friends, classmates, and community members have begun to express condolences and offer support to the grieving family.
A local resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “This hits everyone hard—especially during the summer when so many families are just out trying to enjoy life. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change.”
Counselors and grief support services are being coordinated through local schools and community centers for those affected by the incident.
Safety and Prevention
In light of this tragedy, local officials are urging all families and young swimmers to exercise caution while enjoying the region’s lakes and recreational areas.
“Water safety is something we cannot take lightly,” said one first responder. “Even strong swimmers can get into trouble quickly, and supervision is crucial.”
As the investigation into the drowning continues, Sheriff Campbell’s office has reiterated their commitment to transparency and support for the family, while respecting their need for privacy during this painful time.
The name of the victim will be released at a later date, pending full notification of all family members.
The thoughts and prayers of the entire community are with the family of this young woman as they mourn an unimaginable loss.
