Hamilton, ON — Police have identified 17-year-old Mackale Lavoie as the suspect believed to be responsible for a double shooting in downtown Hamilton that resulted in the tragic death of 26-year-old Belinda Sarodie, an innocent bystander, over the weekend.
The incident took place just before 5:30 p.m. near Jackson Square Shopping Centre, along King Street East between MacNab and James Streets. What began as a busy Saturday evening in the heart of the city quickly turned into a scene of chaos and heartbreak.
According to investigators, Lavoie had arranged to meet three individuals in the downtown area—people authorities believe were the intended targets. During that encounter, Lavoie allegedly opened fire, striking one of the men. Police say he then turned his weapon toward a second individual, but instead struck Belinda Sarodie, an uninvolved bystander who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled on foot heading northbound on James Street, sparking a city-wide manhunt.
A City in Shock
Emergency responders arrived on the scene within minutes. Duty Inspector Greg Doerr confirmed that two victims were located. Tragically, Sarodie was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male victim sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to a nearby hospital.
“This was a horrific and senseless act of violence,” said Insp. Doerr. “A young woman with no connection to the confrontation lost her life in a split second. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this devastating time.”
Suspect Wanted for Murder
Hamilton Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Mackale Lavoie, who is now wanted for second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. Due to the gravity of the charges and the public interest, police obtained a judicial order allowing them to release the identity and photograph of the 17-year-old suspect, despite his youth.
At this time, Lavoie remains at large, and authorities are actively searching for his whereabouts.
Public Urged Not to Approach
Police are strongly urging the public not to approach the suspect if seen. Instead, they ask that anyone with information or sightings contact Hamilton Police Services at 905-546-4925 or call 9-1-1 immediately.
“This young person is considered dangerous,” said police in a public safety statement. “If you know where he is or have seen him, do not engage. Call law enforcement immediately.”
Investigation Ongoing
The investigation remains ongoing, with forensic teams reviewing surveillance footage, gathering witness statements, and examining all possible leads related to the shooting.
Community leaders have spoken out, decrying the violence and calling for an end to the senseless shootings that continue to plague urban centers. “Belinda’s death should never have happened,” said one local official. “She was simply going about her day when her life was stolen by gun violence that had nothing to do with her.”
