WICHITA, Kan. — Authorities are urgently searching for 19-year-old Gauge Brasher following a tragic hit-and-run crash in southeast Wichita on Wednesday that claimed the life of a local teenager.
According to the Wichita Police Department (WPD), the incident occurred near the intersection of Harry Street and Rock Road when Brasher, reportedly driving at a high rate of speed, struck 14-year-old Jackson Nzabonimpa.
Investigators say Jackson was fatally injured in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends and neighbors have described him as a kind-hearted and promising young man whose life was tragically cut short.
Police say Brasher was also injured in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. However, at some point after being admitted, he left the facility without notifying law enforcement and is now wanted in connection to the fatal collision.
“This was an avoidable tragedy,” said a WPD spokesperson. “A young person lost his life, and we are committed to finding the person responsible so that justice can be served.”
Investigators believe speed was a significant factor in the crash and are working to determine whether impairment may have also played a role. The department has not released details about Brasher’s vehicle but confirmed that evidence collected at the scene links him to the incident.
WPD is asking anyone with information about Brasher’s whereabouts to immediately call 911, the Wichita Police Department at 316-268-4111, or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online through the Crime Stoppers website.
The death of Jackson Nzabonimpa has deeply affected the southeast Wichita community, with neighbors expressing shock and sadness over the loss. Local leaders and school officials have extended condolences to Jackson’s family and friends, offering counseling resources to those impacted.
“This family is experiencing unimaginable grief,” one community member said. “We need to stand with them, support them, and make sure the person responsible is held accountable.”
The investigation is ongoing, and police say additional charges may be filed once Brasher is located and taken into custody.
