It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Bryan Orr, who died peacefully last Friday morning at Tidewell Hospice from complications of Lewy Body Dementia.
Bryan was a man whose charm, intelligence, and boundless energy touched every aspect of his life. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he poured it into an incredible range of passions that enriched not only his own life but the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. Whether it was the thrill of sports, the lively debates of politics, the artistry of photography, the adventure of scuba diving and hiking, or the joy of dancing, cooking, gambling, and travel, Bryan embraced every experience with an open heart and a spirited determination.
Professionally and as a deeply involved member of his community, Bryan dedicated himself to compassion, service, and the betterment of others. His commitment to helping people was unwavering, reflected in his work with the Berkshire Public Theater, the Cooper Street Youth Program, the Project Passages De-institutional Program, the Democratic Party, and countless other initiatives.
During his career with MetLife, Bryan made a lasting impact by initiating a Charitable Giving Program for Families with Special Needs Children, a testament to his empathy and vision. His professional achievements were always matched by his desire to see others thrive, and his efforts left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the causes he supported.
Yet above all else, Bryan’s greatest joy and pride came from his role within his family. His love for Sean A. Orr and for Judi, his partner of more than 50 years, was the foundation of his life. He made it possible to provide a warm and welcoming home for his father and Judi’s mother during their final years—an act of generosity and love that spoke to his character. He considered his role in helping to raise Sean into the amazing man he is today as his most important accomplishment.
After more than half a century together, Judi shares that it is impossible to imagine life without him. His absence leaves a void that can never truly be filled, but his memory will continue to inspire love, resilience, and compassion in those he leaves behind.
In keeping with Bryan’s wishes, he has been cremated and will be honored with a Catholic funeral. Details of the service will be shared soon. The family asks that in lieu of cards or flowers, friends and loved ones honor Bryan’s memory by dedicating their time or resources to an act of kindness for someone in need within their community.
Bryan Orr’s life was one of meaning, purpose, and generosity. His passions brought joy, his work brought change, and his love brought warmth to countless hearts. He will be remembered not just for what he did, but for who he was—a man who lived fully, cared deeply, and loved without reservation.
With peace and love,
Judi
