ALTOONA, Iowa — August 15, 2025 — A tragic wrong-way crash on Interstate 80 early Friday morning claimed the life of 19-year-old Zachary Scothorn, a promising Iowa State University student whose future was cut short in the violent collision.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:35 a.m., when Scothorn, driving a Toyota Tundra, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes near Altoona. According to the Iowa State Patrol, his truck collided head-on with an eastbound vehicle, triggering a devastating chain reaction involving three vehicles.
Investigators said a second vehicle traveling eastbound was unable to avoid striking Scothorn’s truck, leaving it disabled in the roadway. Moments later, a third eastbound vehicle collided with the wreckage, compounding the severity of the crash.
Scothorn, who authorities confirmed was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his truck, along with the drivers of the other two vehicles, sustained injuries and were transported by Altoona EMS to a local hospital. Officials have not yet released details on the extent of their injuries.
Scothorn, originally from Johnston, Iowa, had graduated from Johnston High School before enrolling at Iowa State University, where he was pursuing a degree in supply chain management. Friends and family remembered him as a bright, determined, and outgoing young man who had his sights set on building a successful career and a meaningful life.
News of his passing spread quickly through both Johnston and Ames, with former classmates, teammates, and university peers expressing shock and sorrow. Many described Scothorn as someone who cared deeply for his friends and family, with an easygoing personality and a strong work ethic that inspired those around him.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the wrong-way driving incident. It remains unclear where Scothorn entered the interstate or what factors contributed to the crash. The Iowa State Patrol has emphasized that wrong-way collisions are among the deadliest types of roadway incidents due to the force of head-on impacts, and they continue to urge all motorists to exercise caution, wear seatbelts, and remain alert behind the wheel.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions along I-80 in the overnight hours, as emergency crews worked to assist the victims, clear the vehicles, and document the scene for investigators. All lanes were later reopened to traffic by mid-morning.
As the Altoona community mourns, tributes to Scothorn’s life have begun appearing on social media, with friends posting photographs, memories, and messages of love. Johnston High School faculty also shared condolences, remembering him as a student who demonstrated both talent and perseverance.
While the investigation is ongoing, the tragedy has left a lasting mark on all who knew Scothorn. He will be remembered as a son, a friend, and a student whose life ended far too soon.
