MANSFIELD, OH – The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Mansfield Post, is investigating a multi-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Kenworth dump truck driver and injured 81-year-old James Massie of Gahanna on Friday afternoon in Franklin Township. The fatal collision occurred on August 15, 2025, at approximately 1:57 p.m. on State Route 13 North at the intersection of State Route 96 West.
According to investigators, the crash involved three vehicles: a 2025 Chrysler Voyager minivan, a 2005 Kenworth T-800 dump truck, and a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer.
Troopers reported that Mr. Massie was driving the Chrysler eastbound on State Route 96. At the same time, the Kenworth dump truck was traveling northbound on State Route 13, while Amber Boyd, 26, of Mansfield, was driving her Chevrolet Blazer southbound on the same roadway.
Preliminary findings show that Mr. Massie attempted to make a left turn onto State Route 13 from State Route 96 as the Kenworth was entering the intersection. The dump truck struck the passenger side of the Chrysler with significant force. The impact caused the Kenworth to continue forward, strike the guardrail on the southbound side of State Route 13, and overturn.
The driver of the Kenworth, whose identity is being withheld pending confirmation and notification of next of kin by the Richland County Coroner’s Office, suffered fatal injuries. Troopers confirmed the driver was partially ejected from the vehicle during the rollover.
Ms. Boyd, who was traveling southbound, came to a stop just north of the overturned dump truck. Her Chevrolet sustained minor damage, and she was not injured in the crash.
Mr. Massie was transported by Franklin Township EMS to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital for treatment of his injuries. His condition has not been released.
The intersection was closed for several hours as emergency crews responded and investigators worked the scene. The Ohio Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control and cleanup. Additional responding agencies included the Richland County Coroner’s Office, Franklin Township Fire & EMS, Shelby Fire & EMS, and Ronk’s Towing.
The roadway has since been reopened to traffic. Authorities have confirmed that the case remains an active investigation, and further details—including the official identification of the dump truck driver—will be released as they become available.
Do you want me to also insert Amber Boyd’s name into the lead paragraph, so all three people involved are introduced upfront?
