Nottoway County, Va. – A dramatic early-morning pursuit ended in tragedy Saturday when a suspect was shot and killed and a deputy from the Nottoway County Sheriff’s Office was injured following a high-speed chase.
The incident began shortly after 5 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, when a deputy with the Amelia County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 2005 Toyota Tacoma traveling more than 100 mph in a posted 55 mph zone along Route 360 in Amelia County.
The driver refused to stop, sparking a pursuit that soon involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including a Virginia State Police trooper and deputies from the Nottoway County Sheriff’s Office.
The chase came to a halt near the intersection of Rocky Hill Road and eastbound Route 460, when the suspect’s truck veered off the roadway and into the woods. According to officials, the driver fled on foot, prompting deputies and the state trooper to pursue him into the wooded area.
At some point during the confrontation, the suspect was shot and killed. Authorities have not disclosed how many officers discharged their weapons or the specific circumstances leading up to the gunfire.
During the incident, a Nottoway County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot in the hand. The deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and their condition has not yet been publicly updated.
