HOUSTON, TX – July 15, 2025 — The Texas Southern University (TSU) community is reeling following the tragic death of Tyler Martinez, a former football standout and beloved student-athlete, who was found fatally shot on Friday at a Houston apartment complex.
Martinez, a former defensive tackle for the TSU Tigers, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking garage at the Mac 4660 Apartments, a complex located not far from the university’s campus. Houston Police responded to a call at the location, where they found the 22-year-old unresponsive and gravely injured. Despite efforts by emergency personnel, Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have charged 22-year-old Jasper Robinson with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. According to court documents, Robinson later returned to the crime scene and confessed to the killing. He was taken into custody without incident and is now awaiting legal proceedings.
Witnesses at the apartment complex told investigators that a dispute had broken out between Martinez and Robinson, both of whom were residents of the building. The altercation escalated quickly, culminating in gunfire that echoed through the parking structure, sending residents into panic. Investigators have not yet released a motive but confirmed that the two men knew each other prior to the incident.
Tyler Martinez was still enrolled full-time at TSU, where he had left a lasting impression on the football field and in the classroom. Known for his determination, sportsmanship, and leadership, Martinez had previously been a key defensive player for the Tigers. Coaches, teammates, and professors described him as a respected young man with a bright future, someone who brought passion and positivity into every space he entered.
In a statement released over the weekend, TSU Athletics expressed their heartbreak:
“We are devastated by the loss of Tyler Martinez. He was more than an athlete—he was a valued member of our university family. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, teammates, and the entire TSU community as we grieve together.”
Friends, family, and fellow students have begun to hold vigils and share memories on social media, using hashtags like #JusticeForTyler and #TSUStrong to honor his life and call for accountability.
One friend wrote:
“Tyler had so much ahead of him. He didn’t deserve this. He was focused, loyal, and just a genuinely good guy. He brought light wherever he went.”
Martinez’s sudden death marks yet another heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence, especially among young people. The university has announced that grief counselors will be available on campus to support students and staff as they process the loss.
As the investigation continues and legal proceedings move forward, Tyler’s family has asked for privacy and prayers. A memorial service and celebration of life are expected to be announced in the coming days.
The TSU family, and the city of Houston, mourns the loss of a promising life taken far too soon. Tyler Martinez will be remembered for his strength, his kindness, and the indelible mark he left on the people who knew and loved him.
