In the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 15, deputies responded to a distress call reporting a battery in the 1000 block of SW 59th Terrace. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a visibly injured victim who reported being assaulted by 61-year-old James Perry during a violent domestic incident.
According to the initial report, the victim sustained multiple injuries to the face and head that were consistent with being physically struck. The altercation is believed to have occurred inside the residence shared with Mr. Perry. Following the attack, the situation escalated further as Perry allegedly blocked the victim’s attempt to leave the residence and forcibly confiscated their phone, preventing the victim from calling for help.
Despite these efforts to restrict their movement and communication, the victim managed to escape to a neighboring residence, where they were able to alert law enforcement. Deputies responded promptly and initiated efforts to contact the suspect at the original location, utilizing public address announcements and securing the perimeter of the home.
After receiving no response, deputies conducted a full search of the residence and confirmed that James Perry was no longer on the scene. A wider area search was immediately launched to locate the suspect. Their persistence paid off later that morning when, just before 10:30 a.m., Perry was located in the 1000 block of SW 61st Street—a short distance from the original incident site—and was taken into custody without incident.
During his arrest, Perry attempted to downplay the situation by claiming that the victim’s injuries were the result of accidental falls due to intoxication. However, based on the totality of the circumstances, including witness statements, physical evidence, and the victim’s account, deputies determined there was sufficient cause to proceed with arresting Perry.
He has since been charged with the following offenses:
- Battery (Touch or Strike)
- False Imprisonment of a Person
- Hindering Communication with Law Enforcement
Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the charges and the importance of holding individuals accountable for acts of domestic violence and coercive control.
“We commend the quick thinking and bravery of the victim in escaping a dangerous situation,” said a department spokesperson. “And we especially want to recognize the professionalism, persistence, and teamwork demonstrated by our deputies throughout this multi-hour investigation. Their coordinated efforts across shifts ensured the safe apprehension of the suspect and helped restore safety and dignity to the victim.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and further details may be released as they become available. Support services have been made available to the victim.
