Double Shooting at Belleville McDonald’s Under Investigation; Employee in Custody

Belleville, Illinois – A quiet afternoon in Belleville turned into a scene of chaos and concern as police responded to a double shooting at the McDonald’s located at 125 South Belt East on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. According to the Belleville Police Department (BPD), officers were dispatched to the popular fast food restaurant around 4:45 p.m. following reports of a disturbance—only to learn moments later that gunfire had erupted inside the building.

Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims received immediate medical attention and were transported to nearby hospitals, where they are now reported to be in stable condition.

In a shocking twist, police say the alleged shooter was an employee of the restaurant, who discharged a firearm inside the restaurant during the disturbance. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Investigators also confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting was recovered at the location.

Belleville Police have stated that preliminary evidence suggests the suspect and both victims were known to each other, indicating that this may not have been a random act of violence. However, the nature of their relationship and the events that led to the shooting remain under investigation.

The restaurant, located along a busy stretch of South Belt East, was quickly cordoned off by police tape, and investigators remained on scene for several hours collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses. Customers and employees were visibly shaken as they were escorted out of the building, and the restaurant is expected to remain closed until the investigation concludes.

“This is a very active investigation,” said a BPD spokesperson. “We understand the public’s concern, especially given the public nature of where this occurred. At this time, we want to reassure the community that there is no ongoing threat.”

Authorities have not released the names or ages of the victims or the suspect as they continue their work to piece together the sequence of events that led to the shooting. Police are asking any witnesses who may have been at the McDonald’s during the incident or who may have video footage to contact the Belleville Police Department at (618) 234-1212 or CrimeStoppers at (866) 371-TIPS.

As the investigation continues, the Belleville community is left grappling with the disturbing reality that an ordinary day at a neighborhood restaurant nearly turned deadly. Community leaders are urging calm, while commending the swift response of police and emergency medical personnel who likely prevented further injury.

Further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
