Remembering Angel Edgardo Nava: A Life Rooted in Faith, Family, and Community

The Athens, Texas community is mourning the loss of a beloved son, brother, and friend—Angel Edgardo Nava, who passed away on July 10, 2025, in Houston at the age of 37. Known for his kind spirit, athletic talent, and deep connection to his roots, Angel’s passing leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Angel was born and raised in Athens, where his love for sports and community began early. A standout athlete, he played as a kicker in both high school and college football, leaving a lasting impression on teammates and coaches alike with his discipline, determination, and positive attitude. Whether on the field or off, Angel was admired for his work ethic and generous spirit.

Deeply connected to his faith, Angel was a dedicated member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church, where he found comfort, guidance, and a place to serve. His life was one defined not only by his talents but by his humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. He was the kind of person who showed up for others—at family gatherings, church events, and neighborhood functions. Angel’s presence lit up every room he entered, and his laughter and warmth will be remembered by many.

Angel is survived by his loving parents, José Nava and Sandra Durán, who raised him with deep love and unwavering support. He also leaves behind siblings, extended family members, and countless friends who now grieve the sudden loss of a truly remarkable man.

A Funeral Mass will be held in Angel’s honor on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Athens Cemetery. The family has entrusted Hannigan Smith Funeral Home with arrangements. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home, offering friends and loved ones the opportunity to pay their respects and share memories.

As the community of Athens comes together in mourning, they also unite in celebration of a life well-lived. Angel Edgardo Nava leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and service—a testament to the kind of person he was and the many lives he touched.
