In Loving Memory of Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean (1997–2025) ,A Life Cut Short in a Tragic Act of Violence

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the tragic passing of 28-year-old Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean, who lost his life in a fatal shooting outside Yorkdale Mall in Toronto on the morning of Thursday, July 17, 2025. Kashif was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound in what police have described as a deeply concerning and non-isolated act of violence.

According to reports from the Toronto Police Service, officers received a call at approximately 6:13 a.m. about a possible weapons incident near Highway 401 and Dufferin Street, adjacent to the mall’s parking lot. Upon arrival, officers discovered Kashif suffering from life-threatening injuries caused by a firearm. Despite immediate efforts by Emergency Medical Services, Kashif was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident, which occurred in the early morning hours outside one of Canada’s busiest shopping centers, has sent shockwaves through both the local community and beyond.

Ongoing Investigation

During a Thursday press conference, Detective Sajeev Nair addressed the media, noting that the suspect had already fled the scene prior to police arrival. Investigators are actively working to gather surveillance footage, witness accounts, and forensic evidence in what they have deemed a targeted, non-isolated shooting. Detective Nair emphasized the disruption and fear such violence brings to the public and reaffirmed the Toronto Police Service’s full commitment to identifying and apprehending the person or persons responsible.

“This was not just a senseless killing — it was a serious public safety event that endangered anyone nearby,” Nair said. “We will not rest until justice is served for Kashif and his loved ones.”

As of now, no arrests have been made, and police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to come forward.

Remembering Kashif

Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean was far more than just the victim of a violent crime — he was a vibrant soul, a cherished son, brother, friend, and community member. Known for his infectious energy, deep loyalty, and generous heart, Kashif made an impression wherever he went. Friends describe him as a person who could light up a room with a smile, turn strangers into friends, and bring laughter even on the hardest days.

“He always looked out for people,” said one friend. “You couldn’t be around Kashif and not feel that spark of joy and warmth. He had so much more life to live.”

Though his time was far too short, Kashif leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and light. His family is now navigating unimaginable grief, struggling with the reality that someone so full of potential and goodness could be taken in such a violent, sudden way.

The community has responded with an outpouring of sympathy, calls for justice, and support for his family. A memorial vigil is being organized in his honor near the scene, where candles, flowers, and handwritten messages continue to grow in number.

A Call for Peace and Justice

Kashif’s death adds to a rising number of gun-related fatalities in Toronto and underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to urban gun violence, particularly in public spaces. Yorkdale Mall, typically associated with shopping, leisure, and family outings, has now become the site of heartbreak and horror.

Authorities, community leaders, and family members alike are calling for swift justice and long-term change, urging citizens to come forward with any information and to stand against the normalization of violence in our neighborhoods.

“We can’t bring Kashif back,” a family spokesperson shared, “but we can demand answers, accountability, and a safer city for everyone.”

Honoring His Life

Details about funeral services and memorial tributes will be announced in the coming days. The family has requested privacy as they begin to process their grief, but they have also encouraged anyone who knew Kashif to share stories, photos, and memories that celebrate his life.

A GoFundMe campaign is expected to launch shortly to assist the family with funeral expenses and to support causes close to Kashif’s heart, including youth mentorship and anti-violence initiatives.

Rest in power, Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean.

You were taken too soon, but your spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.
