CALCASIEU PARISH, LA — In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) has arrested 27-year-old Zachary P. Gautreau of Lake Charles for the alleged possession of child sexual abuse material and a video depicting sexual abuse of an animal. The arrest was made on Thursday, July 18, following an extensive investigation by law enforcement authorities.
According to a press release issued by the CPSO, detectives with the Special Victims Unit launched an investigation after receiving a cyber-tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The tip reportedly linked Gautreau to illicit material being uploaded or accessed online from a local address.
Following the tip, a search warrant was obtained for Gautreau’s residence, where digital evidence was seized and later analyzed by forensics experts. That examination, according to CPSO, uncovered nine counts of pornography involving juveniles, commonly referred to as child sexual abuse material, as well as evidence of sexual abuse of animals, including a video of bestiality allegedly in his possession.
Charges and Custody
Gautreau was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on the following charges:
•9 counts of Pornography Involving Juveniles
•Sexual Abuse of Animals (Bestiality)
As of Friday, Gautreau remains behind bars. His bond is currently pending, and additional charges could be forthcoming as investigators comb through more digital devices and files obtained during the raid.
Ongoing Investigation
Sheriff Tony Mancuso issued a statement acknowledging the disturbing nature of the case and reaffirming the department’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society.
“The exploitation of children in any form is absolutely abhorrent and will be pursued aggressively by our office,” said Sheriff Mancuso. “I commend our Special Victims Unit for their professionalism and diligence in this difficult and emotionally taxing investigation.”
The case remains active, with law enforcement agencies working in conjunction with federal partners, including the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), to determine whether Gautreau had any known contact with minors or involvement in any online networks.
Community Shock and Concern
The arrest has sparked alarm and outrage across Calcasieu Parish and beyond, particularly due to the dual nature of the charges—both crimes involving children and animals. Parents, educators, and child advocacy groups have voiced serious concern and are calling for increased vigilance online and within the community.
“This case is horrifying on every level,” said one local resident. “It’s a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can exist, even in our own neighborhoods.”
Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with additional information about Gautreau or suspicious online activity to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously by contacting CPSO at (337) 491-3605 or Crime Stoppers at (337) 439-2222.
Authorities are also encouraging parents and guardians to speak with their children about internet safety and to monitor digital devices and communications regularly.
Legal Process Ahead
Gautreau is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, if convicted, he could face significant prison time and lifetime registration as a sex offender. Louisiana law treats child sexual abuse materials and crimes involving animals with severe penalties, particularly when multiple counts are involved.
As investigators continue their work, the community waits anxiously for justice and prays for healing in the wake of this deeply unsettling case.
