Aurora, Colorado (July 19, 2025) — A tragic accident in Aurora has left a 12-year-old boy in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy intersection on his scooter. The incident occurred near East Iliff Avenue and South Wheel Park Circle, an area frequently used by families and pedestrians.
According to the Aurora Police Department (APD), the boy was riding his scooter and used the designated crosswalk, properly activating the pedestrian cross signal to safely cross the street. Witnesses confirmed that traffic was supposed to be stopped at the time, and the signal was visibly engaged when the child entered the intersection.
Tragically, a 19-year-old driver failed to heed the activated crosswalk signals and plowed into the child, striking him with such force that emergency responders were immediately called to the scene. First responders arrived quickly and rendered life-saving aid before the boy was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life in critical condition.
Police say the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Early findings from APD indicate that the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but was simply not paying attention to the road or the active pedestrian signal at the time of the collision.
“This is a heartbreaking and completely preventable tragedy,” said an Aurora PD spokesperson. “Drivers must stay alert, especially near intersections, school zones, and pedestrian crossings. A child’s life has been irreparably harmed by a moment of inattention.”
The incident has reignited community concern about traffic safety in the area, especially for children and families who regularly cross East Iliff Avenue. Local residents report that, while the crosswalk is clearly marked and outfitted with signal lights, many drivers routinely ignore the pedestrian right-of-way.
The Aurora Police Traffic Investigations Unit is continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses. Charges against the 19-year-old driver have not yet been announced, pending further review of the evidence and coordination with the District Attorney’s Office.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam or security footage of the incident to come forward and contact the Aurora Police Department Tip Line.
A Community in Shock
The community is rallying around the injured boy and his family, who are asking for privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. A growing memorial of flowers and messages has begun forming near the intersection where the crash occurred.
Local advocacy groups are also calling for increased driver education, enforcement of pedestrian right-of-way laws, and possible infrastructure improvements to protect children in high-risk areas.
