Atlanta Mourns D’Anthony Reaves After Fatal Shooting on Forsyth Street

ATLANTA, GA – July 19, 2025 — A community is in mourning after 29-year-old D’Anthony Reaves was shot and killed early Saturday morning in downtown Atlanta. The Atlanta Police Department confirmed that officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 200 block of Forsyth Street SW around 5:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, police discovered Reaves suffering from multiple gunshot wounds — two to the face and one to the arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the rapid response by emergency services. The Atlanta Police Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation as they work to determine the motive and identify any suspects involved.

Remembering D’Anthony Reaves

Later that evening, family and friends gathered near the site of the shooting to hold a candlelight vigil in Reaves’ honor. Through tears and embraces, loved ones shared stories and memories of a man they described as vibrant, joyful, and full of life.

“D’Anthony was a free spirit — someone who could light up a room just by walking into it,” said one close friend during the vigil. “He loved to dance, and his energy was contagious. He brought joy to everyone he met.”

Photos of Reaves — smiling, dancing, living life to the fullest — were displayed at the memorial, a stark contrast to the tragedy that unfolded just hours before. Balloons, candles, flowers, and handwritten notes covered the sidewalk where he died, as loved ones prayed, cried, and called for justice.

An Active Investigation

Police have not yet made any arrests in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Investigators are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information, video footage, or tips regarding the shooting is urged to contact the Atlanta Police Homicide Unit or call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477). Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.

At this time, officials have not released details about what may have led to the shooting, but they confirmed they are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and street cameras.

Community Reaction

The murder of D’Anthony Reaves has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing frustration at the persistent violence plaguing parts of Atlanta.

“This violence needs to stop,” said one vigil attendee. “We are losing too many of our young people — brothers, sons, and friends — to senseless acts. D’Anthony deserved so much more.”

As the city mourns the loss of a beloved young man, his family is left to grapple with the pain of losing someone who brought joy and love to those around him. The family says they will continue to honor D’Anthony’s memory through advocacy, remembrance, and calls for peace.
