Tragic Update from Aurora, Colorado: 12-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Struck in Crosswalk

Aurora, CO — A devastating incident has taken a heartbreaking turn. The Aurora Police Department (APD) has confirmed that a 12-year-old boy who was critically injured after being struck by a car on East Iliff Avenue near South Wheel Park Circle has tragically died from his injuries.

The collision occurred while the boy was riding his scooter through a marked crosswalk. According to authorities, he had activated the pedestrian cross signal, which should have stopped traffic in all directions. Despite this, a 19-year-old driver failed to yield, reportedly distracted and not paying attention, and struck the child in the intersection.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and rushed the boy to the hospital in critical condition. For hours, he fought for his life with medical teams doing everything they could. Sadly, APD announced an update late Sunday that the child succumbed to his injuries.

Community in Mourning

The tragic death has sent shockwaves through the Aurora community. Neighbors have begun placing flowers, candles, and stuffed animals at the site of the crash as a growing memorial in honor of the young victim. Many expressed frustration and heartbreak, calling for better enforcement of traffic laws near pedestrian crossings and school zones.

“He did everything right — used the crosswalk, waited for the signal. It should’ve been safe,” one neighbor said tearfully. “He was just a kid, and this should’ve never happened.”

Investigation Ongoing

The 19-year-old driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. APD said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, but inattention and failure to yield are being investigated as contributing causes. Charges have not yet been announced, but investigators are continuing to collect evidence and review surveillance footage from nearby businesses.

The Aurora Police Traffic Investigations Unit is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or may have relevant video footage to contact them immediately.

A Preventable Loss

This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance behind the wheel, especially near crosswalks and areas where children are likely to be present. It’s a call for both drivers and city leaders to ensure no other family has to endure such a senseless loss.

The boy’s name has not yet been released, pending family notifications. Supporters have begun organizing a vigil and possible fundraiser for funeral expenses.
