In Loving Memory of David Giese

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of David Giese on May 2, in Moscow, Idaho. David departed this world unexpectedly, leaving behind a deep void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He was surrounded by his found family and closest friends in his final moments—individuals who became an inseparable part of his life and who will carry forward his memory with love, humor, and gratitude.

David was much more than a beloved member of our community—he was a vibrant force, a creative spirit, and a person whose presence could instantly fill a room with laughter, curiosity, and inspiration. Known for his expansive and colorful personality, David brought a unique spark to every encounter, effortlessly blending intellect with wit, warmth with insight, and artistry with authenticity.

A dedicated and passionate contributor to the University of Idaho College of Art, David devoted much of his life to cultivating not only his own creative practice but also the potential of others. As a mentor, educator, and colleague, he was a source of boundless encouragement, challenging students to explore beyond the conventional and embrace their authentic voices. His classrooms were spaces of transformation—where artistic discovery met rigorous thought, and where his guidance left an indelible mark on generations of aspiring artists.

Beyond academia, David’s artistic legacy is etched into the fabric of Moscow and beyond. His work—deeply personal, often whimsical, always thought-provoking—served as both a mirror and a window: reflecting the world as it is and as it could be. He believed in the power of art to question, to comfort, to provoke, and to heal. And through that belief, he changed lives.

To know David was to be invited into a world of creativity, storytelling, and unfiltered joy. He loved deeply, gave generously, and embraced life with open arms. His friendships were rich and enduring; his laughter unforgettable; his kindness constant.

As we grieve the loss of such an extraordinary individual, we also celebrate the countless ways David enriched our lives. His legacy will live on in the countless stories shared, the students he inspired, the colleagues who were fortunate to collaborate with him, and the art that continues to speak long after its creator is gone.

In this time of mourning, we ask you to keep David’s family—both chosen and biological—and all his friends in your thoughts. The University of Idaho community, the city of Moscow, and all those touched by his life mourn together, but we also remember, with gratitude, the brilliance that was David Giese.

A memorial gathering to honor David’s life and work will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, may we continue to honor his memory by living with the same creativity, compassion, and unapologetic individuality that he so fiercely embodied.

Rest in peace, dear David. Your light will never dim.
