Justice for Marcela Herrera, 22 – Killed in a Heartless Hit-and-Run Weeks Before Her Wedding

The city of Chicago, and more deeply the heart of Pilsen, is reeling with shock, fury, and unbearable grief after Marcela Herrera, a vibrant and loving 22-year-old woman, was struck and killed by a reckless driver in a cowardly hit-and-run late Saturday night, July 19, 2025. Just weeks before she was set to marry the love of her life, Marcela’s future was stolen in the most senseless and violent way—by a driver who did not stop, did not help, and has yet to be brought to justice.

Her Life Was Just Beginning

Marcela was not just a victim—she was a daughter, a partner, a friend, and a cornerstone of her community. She was walking hand-in-hand with her fiancé after a long day working at the Tacos y Tamales Festival, a celebration of Pilsen’s spirit and culture, when the unimaginable happened.

While crossing the street at South Ashland Avenue and West Cullerton Street, a white, silver, or cream-colored SUV—possibly a Jeep—barreled through a crosswalk, striking both Marcela and her fiancé. The vehicle never slowed. It never stopped. Marcela was left dying in the street, while her fiancé was severely injured and rushed to the hospital.

The driver fled south on Ashland and hasn’t been seen since.

This Is More Than a Tragedy—It’s a Crime

Marcela’s death was not an accident—it was an act of recklessness, abandonment, and inhumanity. Someone knows who this driver is. Someone saw something. And yet, as of now, no arrests have been made.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit is actively investigating, but the silence from the community is deafening. Justice cannot wait. This is a case that demands outrage, that demands visibility, and that demands answers.

A Future Erased

Marcela had dreams. She had a dress picked out. She had a wedding date. She had plans for a life filled with love, family, and purpose. She worked hard, loved fiercely, and gave generously. Her life was full of light and promise—until someone took that all away without a second thought.

Now, instead of planning a wedding, her family is planning her funeral.

This is a grief too deep to describe. A wound that won’t heal until the person responsible is held accountable.

🕯️ The Community Responds

The corner of Ashland and Cullerton has become a shrine—a place of mourning and protest. Flowers, candles, and handwritten notes pile up daily. Strangers weep alongside family members. Friends pass out flyers. People are demanding action.

This isn’t just about Marcela. It’s about every victim of hit-and-runs who never saw justice. It’s about a system that must work faster, better, and louder for people who are taken in silence.

You Can Help — Speak Up

If you live, work, or traveled through the area on Saturday, July 19 around 11:00 p.m., check your cameras. Review your dashcam footage. Even the smallest detail could lead to an arrest.

Call the Major Accidents Unit at (312) 745-4521, or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at (800) 535-STOP (7867).

Don’t let Marcela’s killer walk free another day.

We Will Not Forget Her

Marcela Herrera was stolen from her family, from her future, from this world. But her name will not be forgotten. Her story will not be silenced. And her community will not rest until justice is done.

To the driver who fled: you know what you did. And so do we.

To the public: don’t let this go unanswered. Speak up. Share her story. Demand accountability.

Marcela deserved a wedding, a lifetime of love, and a future. Instead, we’re left with mourning. But we won’t let her death be in vain.

Justice for Marcela. Now.
