Deputy-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Bradford County, Florida

Starke, FL — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has launched a full investigation following a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on the evening of Monday, July 21, 2025, in Bradford County. The suspect, identified as Michael Lamar Crawford, age 39 (DOB 06/28/1986), was shot by law enforcement officers after emerging from a residence armed with multiple firearms and refusing commands to stand down.

The incident began unfolding late Monday afternoon after authorities received intelligence connecting Crawford to threats made the previous day against the Florida Credit Union’s call center. While deputies had attempted to locate Crawford on Sunday, they were unsuccessful. However, earlier in the day Monday, Crawford reportedly entered the Florida Credit Union branch in Starke visibly carrying a handgun, prompting immediate concern for public safety.

Further leads directed law enforcement to a residence on NW County Road 225, near State Road 16, where Crawford was believed to be staying with his father. A family member informed deputies that Crawford had been acting erratically in recent days, heightening concern over a possible mental health crisis.

Confrontation and Escalation

Given the potential for violence and the suspect’s known possession of firearms, multiple deputies were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, deputies began attempts to call Crawford out of the home peacefully. As efforts to communicate continued, Crawford’s father exited the home safely, but moments later, Crawford was seen stepping out of the residence carrying a shotgun.

He briefly reentered the house and emerged again—this time brandishing a second long gun.

Despite numerous commands from deputies and visible efforts to de-escalate the situation, Crawford allegedly raised the weapons in a threatening manner. At that point, several deputies discharged their firearms in response to the imminent threat.

Crime Scene and Investigation

Crawford was struck by gunfire and pronounced deceased at the scene. Two long guns were recovered from his person during the initial evidence collection.

In the wake of the shooting, Sheriff Gordon Smith formally requested that the FDLE take over the investigation to ensure full transparency and accountability. Crime Scene Units began immediate processing of the area, which remains cordoned off as part of an active investigation.

“No deputy ever wants to be placed in a position where lethal force is necessary,” Sheriff Smith said in a public statement. “But when faced with a situation where innocent lives and deputy safety are at risk, we are obligated to respond to that threat. Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this difficult and tragic event.”

Community Reaction and Ongoing Review

The shooting has prompted a mixed emotional response from the community—many of whom were shaken by the reports of threats and visible weaponry at a public financial institution just hours before the standoff. Family members of Crawford, along with local advocates, have called for mental health support and a deeper look into warning signs that may have been missed.

The FDLE will continue its investigation over the coming days and weeks. Upon completion, their findings will be forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office for review.

Anyone with additional information about this case is urged to contact the Florida Department of Law Enforcement or the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office.
