HICKORY, N.C. — After ten days of intense investigation, Channel 9 Eyewitness News has confirmed that authorities have made an arrest in connection with the tragic drive-by shooting death of 22-year-old Mariey Peterson. The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has gripped the Hickory community with fear, frustration, and grief.
Mariey Peterson was fatally shot along 2nd Street SE in Hickory during the late evening hours of July 14 in what police described as a targeted drive-by shooting. Witnesses in the area reported hearing a series of gunshots and then discovering Peterson lying on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted life-saving measures, but she was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Just yesterday, Channel 9 aired a major update that included newly obtained surveillance video footage showing a red Dodge Charger believed to be the suspect’s vehicle. The video, which showed the Charger speeding away from the scene shortly after the shots were fired, quickly spread across social media and helped generate new tips for investigators.
Thanks to those tips and days of tireless work by detectives, an arrest was made earlier this morning, though the suspect’s name has not yet been officially released. Police are currently preparing to release more details regarding the arrest, including the charges and possible motive. A press conference is expected within the next hour, where Hickory Police Department officials will provide more information to the public.
The community has been on edge since the fatal shooting. Mariey Peterson, described by friends and family as “a bright soul with a promising future,” had no known ties to criminal activity, and her sudden death left loved ones shattered. Vigils have been held at the site of the shooting, where candles, flowers, and handwritten notes continue to mark the spot where her life was stolen.
“Mariey was full of life, full of laughter, and loved by everyone who knew her,” said one family friend. “She didn’t deserve this, and we’re relieved that someone is finally being held accountable.”
Hickory Police have thanked the public for their assistance in bringing the suspect into custody, crediting the wide circulation of the red Dodge Charger footage with helping crack the case. “The community stepped up,” a spokesperson said. “Every tip matters, and in this case, it led us directly to the person we believe is responsible for Mariey’s murder.”
