Fatal Crash Claims Life of St. Helens Man on Highway 30 in Columbia County

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ore. (July 25, 2025) – Authorities have released an update following a tragic three-vehicle collision that occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 23, 2025, along Highway 30 near milepost 39 in Columbia County. The crash resulted in the death of 90-year-old Gary Ronald Thomas of St. Helens, and left two others injured.

Crash Summary

At approximately 3:59 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to reports of a major crash involving three vehicles. The preliminary investigation indicates that Gary Ronald Thomas, driving a gray Chevrolet Cruze eastbound, crossed into the westbound lane for reasons that are still under investigation.

His vehicle struck a purple Saturn SL1, operated by 20-year-old Kyler Warren Rinck of Longview, Washington, and then collided with a blue Toyota Camry, driven by 61-year-old Cori Marie Mack of Rainier, Oregon.

Victim Updates

  • Gary Ronald Thomas, who was seriously injured in the crash, was airlifted by Life Flight to a regional hospital. Sadly, he later passed away from his injuries.
  • Kyler Rinck, the driver of the Saturn, also sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital where he remains under medical care.
  • Cori Mack, the driver of the Toyota, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle for treatment.

Emergency Response and Road Closure

The crash prompted a large emergency response effort. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Rainier Police Department, Columbia County Fire and Rescue, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) all assisted at the scene. Highway 30 was closed for approximately two hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the crash and clear the roadway.

Ongoing Investigation

The Oregon State Police continue to investigate the cause of the collision. It is not yet known why Mr. Thomas’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic. Investigators are considering multiple factors, including potential medical issues or other underlying causes. There is currently no indication of impairment.

The death of Gary Ronald Thomas has left the St. Helens community in mourning. Described as a kind and well-respected member of the community, Thomas’s passing is being deeply felt by family, friends, and neighbors who knew and cared for him.
