BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – July 25, 2025 — The city of Birmingham is reeling from the tragic and untimely death of 17-year-old Reginald Pope, who was found fatally shot in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 23, in the Gate City housing community. The devastating loss has sent shockwaves throughout the neighborhood, leaving loved ones, classmates, and community members grappling with grief, frustration, and calls for change.
According to Birmingham Police, officers were dispatched shortly after 5:30 a.m. to the Gate City neighborhood in eastern Birmingham, following a report of a person found unresponsive. Upon arrival, officers discovered Reginald suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and pronounced him deceased shortly after arrival. Authorities have since confirmed that Reginald died from injuries sustained in a homicide.
As of Friday morning, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
A Life Cut Short
Reginald Pope was more than a name in a headline — he was a vibrant and ambitious young man with dreams and promise. Those who knew him describe him as charismatic, kind-hearted, and driven, with a passion for music and aspirations to create a better life for himself and his family. He was a student who had faced challenges but was striving to overcome them, and he was loved deeply by those around him.
“He had a heart of gold,” said one family member. “Reginald had been through a lot, but he never lost his smile. He wanted more out of life, and he was working hard to get there.”
Friends and relatives gathered near the scene later that day, holding hands and wiping away tears as they struggled to process the loss. Some laid flowers and candles near the spot where Reginald’s life was taken, creating a small memorial in his honor.
A Community in Mourning
The Gate City housing community — already grappling with issues of violence and disinvestment — has been rocked by the killing. Residents are expressing deep concern over safety and the escalating incidents of gun violence involving youth in Birmingham.
“This has to stop,” said a neighbor who lives near where the shooting occurred. “Our children deserve to grow up, not be buried. Reginald was just 17. He had a whole life ahead of him.”
Birmingham Police and community leaders continue to call for anyone with information to come forward. Authorities are urging residents to report anything they may have seen or heard in the early morning hours of Wednesday. Tips can be provided anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
Seeking Justice, Honoring His Memory
While detectives work tirelessly to bring answers to Reginald’s grieving family, the community is rallying to honor his memory. A vigil is being planned by local youth leaders, where friends and family will gather to share memories, pray for peace, and advocate for meaningful change in neighborhoods plagued by senseless violence.
Community activist and youth mentor Terrance Green said:
“We’ve lost too many. These aren’t just names — they are sons, brothers, cousins, and friends. Reginald’s life mattered. We need justice, but more importantly, we need to wake up as a community and protect our youth.”
As Birmingham mourns another young life lost to violence, Reginald Pope’s name joins a growing list of lives taken far too soon. His memory will be cherished by those who loved him, and his story will serve as a painful reminder of the work that remains to ensure no more families endure such heartbreak.
Anyone with information that could assist detectives is urged to contact the Birmingham Police Department or reach out to Crime Stoppers. Tips that lead to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.
Rest in peace, Reginald. Your light was dimmed too soon, but your spirit will never be forgotten.
