LAFAYETTE, Calif. – July 26, 2025 — The California Highway Patrol’s Contra Costa Area Office is investigating a fatal solo-vehicle accident that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday on State Route 24 (SR-24) in Lafayette.
At approximately 4:15 a.m., CHP officers responded to the scene of a reported crash on eastbound SR-24, just west of Pleasant Hill Road. Upon arrival, they discovered a black Toyota sedan that had veered off the roadway and collided with multiple trees located on the south side of the highway.
According to preliminary findings, the vehicle was being driven by an adult male, who was the sole occupant. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota left the right shoulder of the freeway, causing the car to strike trees and suffer severe damage. Tragically, the driver did not survive the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Investigation in Progress
Authorities are continuing to examine the cause of the collision. At this time, it remains unclear what led the vehicle to exit the roadway. Investigators are working to determine whether drugs or alcohol may have been a contributing factor, although DUI has not yet been ruled out. Toxicology results and additional forensic analysis are pending.
The driver’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office.
