MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Whittier neighborhood is grieving the senseless and heartbreaking loss of Justin “Juice” Marshall, who was tragically shot and killed in the early morning hours of Friday, July 25th — a day that should have been a celebration of his birthday. Instead, his family and friends are left reeling, searching for answers and calling for justice.
Justin had spent the evening at Mortimer’s Bar near the intersection of Lyndale and Franklin Avenue, enjoying time with friends, laughter, and life — as anyone should be able to on their birthday. Sometime around 2:30 a.m., as the night came to a close, shots rang out either just in front of the bar or next door. When the gunfire ceased, Justin lay fatally wounded. First responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Justin succumbed to his injuries.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. No suspects have been arrested. No motive has been identified. Police have not disclosed whether the shooting appeared targeted or random, but those closest to Justin are adamant: he wasn’t involved in anything criminal or dangerous.
“Juice wasn’t in a gang. He wasn’t violent. He wasn’t someone who even raised his voice — unless his teammates made an amazing play in kickball or paintball,” said one of his longtime friends. “He was gentle, goofy, loyal — just a solid, good-hearted person. He was out with his friends for his birthday. That’s it.”
Justin’s loss has left a deep scar in the lives of those who knew and loved him. Tributes have poured in from across the city — from former classmates, coworkers, neighbors, and teammates. He was known for his big smile, dependable nature, and quiet strength. He worked hard, treated others with kindness, and never looked for trouble.
Now, his community is mobilizing — not only in grief, but in determination. A growing chorus of voices is demanding answers and pushing for action from law enforcement to ensure this case doesn’t fade into obscurity.
“This can’t become just another unsolved murder in Minneapolis,” said a community organizer helping Justin’s friends raise awareness. “We need the city to pay attention. We need every lead followed. Juice deserves justice.”
Authorities are urging anyone who lives or works in the area near Lyndale and Franklin and who may have heard or seen anything around the time of the shooting — even something seemingly minor — to come forward. Surveillance footage, cellphone videos, or eyewitness accounts could be critical to moving the investigation forward.

As the days pass and the pain deepens, Justin’s loved ones remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice. Candlelight vigils and memorial gatherings are being planned, not only to honor Justin’s life, but to shine a light on the violence that stole it — and to demand change in a city that continues to suffer from gun-related tragedies.
“Juice deserved so much more,” his friend said quietly. “He had a life to live. We won’t let this be forgotten.”
