WYANDOTTE COUNTY, KANSAS – July 27, 2025 — A solemn cloud has descended over the state of Kansas following the tragic death of Deputy Elijah Ming, a 34-year-old law enforcement officer with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has launched a full inquiry into the fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, July 26, 2025.
According to early reports, Deputy Ming was dispatched to a residence in Kansas City, Kansas, after authorities received a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance. The incident took place shortly after 2:30 p.m. in a residential neighborhood known for being typically quiet and family-oriented. Upon arrival, Deputy Ming approached the scene alone while waiting for backup, attempting to de-escalate a tense and volatile situation that was reportedly unfolding inside the home.
What began as a standard domestic call tragically escalated when the suspect inside the home allegedly opened fire on the responding deputy. Deputy Ming was struck by gunfire multiple times. Despite the immediate efforts of emergency medical personnel who arrived minutes later, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The suspect was also shot during the encounter and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Their identity has not yet been publicly released, and their condition remains closely monitored by authorities.
Deputy Ming had served with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office for more than a decade, earning the respect and admiration of his peers and community members alike. Known for his calm demeanor, dedication to service, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life, he was regarded as a beacon of integrity in law enforcement. He leaves behind a wife and two young children, along with a devastated department and a heartbroken community.
“This is a day of profound grief for our agency and our county,” said Sheriff Darrell Uzzell in an emotional statement Saturday evening. “Deputy Elijah Ming was a husband, a father, a protector, and a leader. He wore the badge with honor and answered the call with bravery and compassion every day he served. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has assumed the lead in the investigation, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings in the state. KBI officials confirmed they are gathering physical evidence, reviewing body-worn camera footage, and interviewing all potential witnesses to construct a comprehensive timeline of events leading to the fatal encounter.
Governor Laura Kelly extended her condolences in a public message late Saturday, stating, “Kansas mourns the loss of Deputy Elijah Ming, a hero who gave his life in the line of duty. Our thoughts are with his family, colleagues, and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
The local community has begun organizing vigils and memorials in honor of Deputy Ming. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Monday evening outside the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office headquarters, where flowers, flags, and handwritten messages already line the front steps.
As the investigation continues, the law enforcement community in Kansas and beyond stands in solemn unity, honoring the memory of a man who gave everything to protect others. Deputy Elijah Ming’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the community he served, and the example he set for future generations of peace officers.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days. The Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office is also accepting donations for the Ming family through an official fund set up in partnership with the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation.
Deputy Elijah Ming is the embodiment of courage and sacrifice. May he rest in eternal peace.
